SANJIESAN LICENSING / Character integration

A character appearance should have a reason to be there

Putting a recognisable character on an object can be an understandable starting point, but a collaboration proposal becomes stronger when it explains the connection. Look for a relationship supported by existing material: a visual motif, an established setting or an appropriate presentation of the object. Keep creative interpretation separate from new claims about the character.

Choose the reference before writing the connection

Select one existing visual and identify the features that matter to the proposal. Record the established character identity separately from the artwork version. For Sanjiesan card material, retain the original identity reference rather than treating a different illustration as a new person. Describe the connection using only the available reference, and leave unsupported motives or relationships out of the commercial story.

Give the object a role beyond decoration

Describe how the visual and object work together. A pattern might frame the useful part of a textile, or a selected scene might suit the viewing angle of a display piece. Sketch the object without the character to check that its use remains understandable. Then add the chosen reference and compare whether the association brings a specific quality rather than hiding an unresolved product idea.

Ask reviewers about the exact interpretation

Write a short explanation beside the rough showing what the appearance is intended to communicate. Mark any new proposed association as a question for the designated content reviewer. If that association is not supported, the team can choose a simpler visual treatment. Keep the final commercial wording aligned with the actual decision, rather than retaining an appealing story sentence after the underlying idea has been rejected.
