Plan a lifestyle image that shows the object honestly

A lifestyle image can help a viewer understand scale and placement, but it can also hide the object behind an elaborate scene. Before commissioning a shoot, decide which practical question the image should answer. If the object is still a concept, use a clearly labelled visual proposal rather than making the scene imply that a finished product already exists.

Give each planned image a distinct purpose

List a small sequence: an overall view to show placement, a closer view for a relevant detail and a plain reference for the object’s shape. Describe what needs to remain visible in each. Avoid asking one photograph to communicate every feature. Where the proposal includes a scale reference, choose an ordinary recognisable object and explain its role rather than manipulating perspective to make the product look larger.

Separate available objects from proposed additions

Mark which elements are actual samples, existing props or planned visual additions. Share that distinction with the photographer and the person writing the caption. If a sample lacks a final material or finish, keep that limitation attached to the image selection. A beautiful set should not quietly turn a temporary prototype detail into a product specification or an unconfirmed accessory into an included item.

Review both the frame and its caption

Compare the selected frame with its stated purpose. Can the viewer identify the object without reading a long explanation? Does the caption distinguish a concept rendering from a photographed sample when that matters? Keep the source file and selected crop connected so later listing images can be checked against the same reference. Choose clarity over a dramatic scene that answers none of the intended practical questions.
