SANJIESAN LICENSING / Gifting occasions

A gift brief should describe the recipient, not only the buyer

A gift buyer and the eventual user are not always the same person. A proposal can appeal strongly to a fan choosing it while leaving the recipient unsure what to do with it. Map a modest gifting occasion from selection to everyday use, without claiming that the exercise predicts demand or a particular emotional response.

Choose one occasion and its constraints

Use a clearly hypothetical occasion such as a colleague’s farewell or a friend’s new home. Note what the buyer knows about the recipient and what remains uncertain: available space, familiarity with the story or preferred colours. Keep unknowns visible. A gift brief should not turn a shared workplace, age or interest into proof that everyone wants the same character on a large decorative object.

Distinguish the reveal from the useful object

Describe the first opening moment, then remove the outer presentation and describe what remains. Does the object have a clear place or use? Can a short card explain the visual without requiring the recipient to read a long world guide? Try a quieter visual option alongside a prominent character treatment. The comparison can expose whether the proposed gift relies entirely on the buyer’s familiarity with the property.

Use the exercise to narrow the proposal

Write the choices supported by the exercise: a smaller footprint, a shorter explanation or a different object format, for example. Bring those specific questions into the partner discussion instead of promising universal appeal. If the recipient’s needs remain unclear, the sensible next step may be a different gifting occasion. Avoid solving every uncertainty by adding more packaging, more pieces or a larger product bundle.
